RaeAn Designs | Micrography Art & Education
Rae Antonoff ("RaeAn") Portnoy is a micrography artist & Jewish educator based in Los Angeles, California. She teaches and designs curricula for Hebrew schools and leads workshops and artist-in-residence programs around Southern California and the U.S.
Micrography, or micro-calligraphy, is an art form that dates back to the 9th century, originating the the city of Tzfat, in the north of modern-day Israel. While the earliest works of micrography were scribed in Hebrew as a form of meditation on the meaning of the texts, other cultures and languages soon embraced the art form, which can now be seen in synagogues, mosques, churches, and secular spaces around the world. Most micrography is scribed in black ink, but Rae works with over 500 different pigmented pens to breathe new life into the ancient texts and scribal art form.
While most of Rae's pieces are in Hebrew, she has also started adding some English pieces, with texts pulled from TV, film, & more.
